If you had a difficult childhood, and your parents were not the best, sometimes we carry over these experiences as we parent our own children.
How you parent is usually the sum total of the experiences that you received or experienced with your own parents. If you want to learn how to be a great parent, usually you have to learn from the mistakes that you experienced, and not repeat them with your own kids. Parents, and soon-to-be parents, should learn the skills as quickly as possible.
The best inheritance that you can ever give your children is to become a role model as a positive parent, something that they will share with their own children later in life. Raising children becomes magnified greatly for each additional child you have. Without making an effort not to, it can really be easy to show favoritism for one child over another. Showing favoritism is not always easy to avoid, because people are human, and it normally takes work not to pick favorites among your children.
The most important thing is to be aware of it and maintain a healthy perspective.
If you become aware that you do have a favorite among your children, proceed with caution and work to understand the situation. Family life is a mini dictatorship where the children must know what is expected of them. Children like being a part of something and good parents will make them feel part of the family. Teach your children how to be responsible in being part of a family, and it will last with them the rest of their lives. Build on positive values and more positive values will come, but the opposite happens also.
